Following the designation of Chinatown as a historic and cultural preservation district by the municipal and provincial governments, the Chinatown community conducted a year-long series of public consultation hearings, culminating in the development of the Chinatown Development Plan 2021-2026. One of the community’s primary objectives was to establish a liaison platform with the municipal government, thereby creating a forum for internal information exchange and assisting the city in implementing the Chinatown Development Plan.
In July 2022, the Chinatown community took the initiative to establish the Chinatown Roundtable, aiming to achieve equitable representation of all stakeholders within Chinatown. The Roundtable’s directors comprise representatives from youth, residents, community service organizations, clan associations, and community groups active in areas such as neighborhood greening, housing rights, businesses, and cultural heritage. The Chinatown Roundtable operates with historical awareness, remembering Canada’s history of anti-Chinese discrimination and the fact that all North American Chinatowns were built on Indigenous lands.

Since its inception, the TRQC has implemented important initiatives with numerous partners in Chinatown, such as the first Asian-Indigenous garden, a food security project benefiting low-income Asian communities in Chinatown and Côte-des-Neiges, Chinatown Day, our GO GO GO seniors’ club, and the Committee on Housing Rights and Urban Planning.
